Actor, singer and film producer Andy Lau is a superstar of his era and among the best-loved actor-singers in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. He enrolled in TVB’s acting school and started showing promise in the TV series The Emissary (1982). That same year, he was cast in Ann Hui’s Boat People (1982), becoming famous overnight. In 1985, he launched his singing career alongside his acting projects. Known for his strong work ethic, Lau has since been involved in 12 TV series, some 150 films and published around 100 Cantopop albums. He has also won numerous awards, including Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Running out of Time (1999) and A Simple Life (2012). In 2004, he was honoured with the Best Actor Award by both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Critics Society for his performance in Running on Karma (2003). Infernal Affairs III (2003) and A Simple Life (2011) enabled him to bag Best Actor twice at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards. His other popular works include As Tears Go By (1988), A Moment of Romance (1990), Full Throttle (1995) and Infernal Affairs (2002). In 1991, Lau founded Teamwork Motion Pictures, which produced Saviour of the Soul (1991) and various other titles. In 1997, Lau produced the independent Fruit Chan-helmed Made in Hong Kong (1997), which went on to win numerous awards in Hong Kong and overseas. In 2002, he founded Focus Films. Through the studio, he invested in small-scale dramas and groomed young directors. Successful investments have included mainland director Ning Hao’s Crazy Stone (2006) and Hong Kong production Gallants (2010), directed by Derek Kwok and Clement Cheng. Lau received the Bronze Bauhinia Star from the Hong Kong Government in 2016.
