Beijing-born actor and singer Leon Lai moved to Hong Kong at age six and was educated in both Hong Kong and England. In 1986, he won third prize in the 5th New Talent Singing Contest and joined TVB as a contract artist the same year. Named one of the “Four Heavenly Kings” of Cantopop, he has released more than 60 albums since 1989. Lai launched his film career in 1987, appearing in a host of romantic and heroic films, including Wicked City (1992), Fallen Angels (1995), Eighteen Springs (1997), A Hero Never Dies (1998), Bullets of Love (2001), Heroic Duo (2003), Forever Enthralled (2008) and White Vengeance (2011). He was nominated for Best Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards for Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996) and City of Glass (1998); he won the Best Original Film Song award for the latter work. Lai was named Best Actor at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards for Three: Going Home (2002). He served as the creative and production controller for Leaving Me, Loving You (2004), and scooped the Best Actor Award at the Changchun Film Festival in China. In 2006, Lai scripted, directed and starred in the musical film A Melody Looking, which featured artists from his own music studio. His recent works include Lady of the Dynasty (2015). He was honoured with the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong Government in 2009.
