A leading diva of her time, Anita Mui demonstrated her multifaceted singing and acting talents in numerous Cantopop hits and silver screen classics in genres spanning romantic drama, comedy and martial arts. Mui began singing at age four at the Lai Chi Kok Amusement Park. In 1982, aged 18, she won the first annual New Talent Singing Awards. She debuted as an actress in 1983, and a year later won Best Supporting Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards with Behind the Yellow Line (1984). Her ability to portray a diverse range of characters was evident in such works as Kawashima Yoshiko (1990), Au Revoir, Mon Amour (1991), The Heroic Trio (1993), Justice, My Foot! (1992), Dance of Dream (2001) and July Rhapsody (2002). In Wu Yen (2001), she cross-dressed to play two male characters – “Emperor Xuan” and “Duke Huan of the State of Qi”. In 1987, Rouge (1988) won her Best Actress at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, the Asia-Pacific Film Festival and the Hong Kong Film Awards. In 1997, she was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in Eighteen Springs (1997) by the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Critics Association. In 2004, she was honoured with the Timeless Artistic Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards. Mui was always concerned about the development of the film industry and the well-being of society in general. She was the former president of the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild. Her achievements and magnanimity to charitable causes earned her the moniker “the Daughter of Hong Kong”.
