Actress Carina Lau Kar Ling left her hometown of Suzhou in 1980 to settle in Hong Kong. In 1984, she joined TVB’s acting course and began putting her skills to the test in Police Cadet (1984) and other dramas. Lau’s first movie was Naughty Boys in 1986 and she appeared in several other films that contributed to her persona as a voluptuous seductress. She was nominated for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for I’m Sorry (1989) and Gigolo and Whore (1991). By the 1990s, Lau had established herself as a top actress. In 1998, she won Best Actress at the Golden Bauhinia Awards for Intimates (1997). Days of Being Wild (1990) scooped her Best Actress in France’s Three Continents Festival while receiving Best Actress nominations at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards. Curiosity Kills the Cat (2006) landed Lau Best Actress recognition at China’s Golden Rooster Awards in 2007. In 2011, she was named Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the first time for Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2010). In 2017, Lau acted in, and became a first-time producer for, Dreams (2017).
