Actress Maggie Cheung’s showbiz career began at age 18 when she won second place in the Miss Hong Kong Pageant. She subsequently joined TVB, appearing in serial dramas, most memorably Police Cadet (1984). When her contract with TVB ended, she hit the big screen, appearing in such titles as Prince Charming (1984), Behind the Yellow Line (1984), Rose (1986), Last Romance (1988), As Tears Go By (1988), Song of the Exile (1990) and The Heroic Trio (1993). Cheung’s versatile acting skills won her multiple awards locally and internationally. She has five Best Actress wins at the Hong Kong Film Awards, for A Fishy Story (1989), Centre Stage (1992), Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996), The Soong Sisters (1997) and In the Mood for Love (2000). She is a four-time Best Actress winner at the Golden Horse Awards, thanks to Full Moon in New York (1990), Centre Stage (1992), Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996) and In the Mood for Love (2000). With Centre Stage (1992), Cheung became the first ever Chinese performer to receive the Best Actress Award at the Berlinale. The accolade confirmed her as a world-class actress of global renown. Cheung also appeared in foreign-language films such as Irma Vep (1996), Chinese Box (1997) and Augustin, King of Kung-fu (1999). In 2004, Cheung was honoured with the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in Olivier Assayas’s Clean.
